It’s commonly said around King St; “Trouble doesn’t make an advanced appointment on your calendar – it just shows up!” As we all know from this year, the unexpected can and does happen but what can we do about it? When trouble arrives, being a part of a community is a lifeline. There are numerous examples of small groups at King Street that have had to navigate job loss, illness and the loss of a loved one. Throughout all these situations, the support, care and provision of a small group of friends has been a vital reason those affected have been able to pass through the storm.
The inspired words of the apostle Paul tell us to “share each other’s burdens, and in this way, obey the law of Christ,” (Galatians 6:2) and the writer of Ecclesiastes says “two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). It’s clear that God’s doesn’t desire that we face life’s challenges alone, He wants us to do it together.
Having a lifeline doesn’t require that you know 50 people to help you. You need a handful, four to six friends who ‘obey the law of Christ.’ There are just some things you weren’t meant to do by yourself. No person should have to go into a surgical waiting room alone, no one should be by themselves the first night after a loved one has passed away or wait anxiously on a test result. Your community is God’s protection and strength during difficult moments. It’s also a place to celebrate events like a new baby, milestones like baptism, the answered prayer of meaningful work. God’s answer to celebrating triumphs and navigating troubles are just a few friends. Are you in a small group community?
